Additional Information

"When an elderly Tamarac woman fell inside her home and was unable to get up, the "RUOK?" program brought BSO and fire rescue personnel to her aid. The free service, a co-operative venture between the North Broward Hospital District, BSO and four BSO-patrolled cities, was credited with her rescue after her initial cries for help went unheard.

The "RUOK?" program uses a computerized dialing system to call enrollees every morning. Once a participant answers the phone, an automated message instructs them to hang up. If the call is not answered, an alert is initiated. In the Tamarac woman’s case, an answering machine picked up and BSO District 7 employees activated an alert. The woman’s “emergency key holder” (a trusted neighbor) was immediately notified. The neighbor checked on the woman, called 9-1-1 and District 7 deputies and Broward County Fire Rescue personnel responded.

BSO has participated in the "RUOK?" program for six years. It’s available free of charge to elderly or incapacitated residents in four BSO-patrolled cities including Lauderdale Lakes, Tamarac Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.

For more information, contact the BSO District Office in these cities:

Lauderdale Lakes: (954) 497-1646
Tamarac: (954) 720-2225
Deerfield Beach: (954) 480-4300
Pompano Beach: (954) 786-4201"
