Additional Information

"Frequently Asked Questions about The "Are You O.K.?" (R.U.O.K.) Program

Q: What is the "Are You O.K.?" (R.U.O.K.) Program?

A: "Are You O.K.?" is a telephone reassurance program. In 1991, the River Oaks Lions Club and the River Oaks Police Department partnered together to bring this program to the residents of River Oaks. The equipment and material expenses were provided by the Lions and the program is funded and maintained by the Police Department. If you live alone, a daily telephone call to confirm your well-being can be reassuring. Although you may have friends or relatives occasionally checking on you, the "R.U.O.K.?" program will be a consistent and reliable contact - seven days a week. If you are an older person or homebound, it may give you a feeling of security to be contacted on a regular daily basis. The "R.U.O.K.?" telephone reassurance system also eases the concern of friends and relatives, who may find it difficult to maintain consistent, reliable contact with you. The "R.U.O.K.?" system automatically makes these calls about the same time each and every day of the year, inexpensively and without interruption to normal community services.

Q: What does it cost?

A: The program is FREE to River Oaks residents.

Q: How does it work?

A: At a pre-arranged time, you will receive a telephone call. "Good Morning!" the recorded message announces. "This is the River Oaks Police Department. Are You O.K.?" Your response should be in a very audible tone, "Hello ... I am find today." This response will be heard on a monitor in the Police Communications Center.

Q: What if I don't answer the phone?

A: If your telephone line is busy, or if there is no answer, the system will call back two more times. If the line stays busy or there is no answer, an ALERT will flash on a computer screen in the River Oaks Police Communications Center to signal a possible emergency. A Police Officer will be dispatched to your residence immediately to check on your well-being.

Q: What if my door is locked?

A: When you become a subscriber to the "R.U.O.K.?"program you will be asked to identify other key holders who may assist in an emergency situation.

Q: When can I be called?

A: You may select a calling time from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Then seven days a week you will routinely receive your call at approximately the same time every morning.

Q: What if I'm out of town or away?

A: If you ever need to temporarily stop the daily safety check, or change any information provided to us, call the Police Department at 817-626-1991 at least one day in advance. False "Alert" call-outs Must Be Prevented.

Q: What are my responsibilities?

A: Arrange your calling time sometime after your normal waking time and before you start activities outside your home (gardening, shopping, neighboring, etc.) False alarms must be avoided! Remember, the Police Department must provide other services and is dependent on your cooperation.

Q: How do I stop the service?

A: If you have to stop the service temporarily, or change the information provided to us on your data sheet, simply call 817-626-1991 and leave a message. An "R.U.O.K.?" staffer will call you back to confirm your call.

Q: Who is eligible?

A: The service is for anyone, regardless of social or economic conditions, who requests a daily telephone safety check. This could include, but is not limited to, older adults or handicapped or homebound persons of any age.

Q: O.K., How do I sign up for the service?

A: Simply fill out the on-line interest form and an "R.U.O.K.?" staff person will contact you to arrange for a home visit to obtain basic confidential information that is needed to begin the service. If you do not have internet access, call the River Oaks Police Department at 817-626-1991 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The Police Dispatcher will answer your questions, and will arrange for a home visit by an "R.U.O.K.?" staff person, to obtain basic confidential information that is needed to begin the service."
