"The Shively Police offer a unique program to this community called R.U.O.K. This initiative began in 1995 with the purchase of a computer system donated by the Shively Lions Club. The telecommunications section of the Shively Police operates the computer system for elderly, shut-ins or handicapped individuals. The computer program automatically calls the participants once a day at the same time to verify their well being. If there is no response to the daily telephone call, a second call will be made after ten minutes. Should this not produce any results, then a police officer will be dispatched to the residence of the participant. This program has proven to be effective as well as a peace of mind for the participants and concerned family members.
