"Originally funded by a gift from the Stow Rotary Club and private citizens, the Department offers a computerized phone service designed to automatically call the residences of people who live alone. The R.U.O.K. program contacts persons Monday - Friday at prearranged times. If the call is not answered, a contact person will be notified. If unsuccessful or in the case of a possible emergency, the officer will enter the house to check on the welfare of the person.
The program has demonstrated its worth. An incident occurred involving an ALERT being issued when the participant failed to answer the phone and upon checking, the police found the resident had been incapacitated due to a fall. Medical assistance was summoned and it was probable the victim would have died without this service.
